Solar Bridge Schools (Night schools)

Barefoot College, Tilonia, is funding 58 evening schools for over 1,300 children in the state of Rajasthan. These schools offer children who are not able to attend a regular day school a basic primary education in the evening. Most of the children are first generation learners in their families. The evening schools are located in the villages where the children live. Some 30 children in grades 1 to 5 attend lessons between 6 and 9 o’clock in the evening. The children love going to night school. Most of them are girls (1,000 of a total of 1,300). The children get a basic education. That means they learn how to read, how to write and how to count. They also undergo regular health examinations and learn important life skills: how a bank or a post office functions, why clean drinking water is so important and how you care for and breed animals.

The Residential Bridge School

Barefoot College has initiated a Residential Bridge School, where 40 to 50 students of migrating  families spend a year preparing for the transition to a regular state school. The Residential Bridge School not only offers students the opportunity to increase their knowledge. It also gives them the chance to acquire valuable social skills in daily interactions. The children develop their personal strengths, learning how to deal with challenges and how to reach the goals they have set themselves. The girls and boys are involved in the decision-making processes within the school community and are encouraged to help shape it (eg. by shopping for food). In this way they learn to understand their environment and to make a valuable contribution to it. Barefoot College is convinced that education involves more than the acquisition of knowledge. Education also includes the acquisition of social skills. Children’s active involvement and self-determination are vital pre-requisites for focused learning, achieving one’s full potential and social interaction.
